Haiku Deck Graphs

We've been working really hard in math collecting and analyzing data.

On Thursday and Friday we culminated the unit with a really fun project!

Students -
   - came up with a survey question
   - collected data from their classmates
   - analyzed the data and made a comparison statement
   - translated their data into a graph using the Haiku Deck app
   - typed and illustrated their comparison statement

Then we published their slides and shared the data with each group.

Here are their finished products. Student initials were used for the titles, so find which one belongs to your child! Click through the slides - the initials are included on the last slide.

Not quite everyone got finished (some wanted to do two surveys & didn't get to finish publishing) I'll share those next week!

Pretty AWESOME huh? I think so! I'm so proud of our little mathematicians and their thinking!

Fall Fun

We're creating this chart about fall together.

We read

And watched this video to get our brains thinking!

What else can we add?

Fun with Dogs - poems, books and more

The week before last we read A Ball For Daisy & Ball - both nearly wordless books that made us think about our thinking (metacognition).  This week the 2 books were in our story retell station.

We also painted dogs, read several dog poem books and wrote a dog poem together. Here's some of our work ...

We used the Haiku Deck app to collaboratively write a poem.

We also enjoyed this fun song/video about dogs  -

Nouns

We started learning about nouns today.

Here's our chart -

Then we made a Pic Collage on an iPad together. We loved using this app! We used it in math too!

You can share about nouns at home. :)

Literacy / Newsletter & Homework Tabs

I added some great information to the tabs at the top of our class blog this weekend.

Under the Literacy tab -

You can now view both of our high frequency word lists.
We are working on the 75 word list right now - some of them are review words from kinder and some will be new to our 1st graders this year.
After those words are on the wall, we'll move on to the 100 word list.

Expect to see High Frequency word evaluations coming home each 9 weeks. I'll be working to differentiate words, so that if your child already knows it, they aren't practicing it more.

Under the News & Homework tab -

You can now access any homework or newsletter that you can't find. Each week's work will be at the top of the list.

Place Value Party

Yesterday and today we've been having a place value party!

We started by reading Zero by Kathryn Otoshi. It's a great way to get us thinking about tens and ones.

Then we got started building tens and ones with several different math tools.

Watch our Haiku Deck presentation below using some of the pictures we took while working. The last slide is our anchor chart about groups of tens, and ones.

Slick Came Out

Slick came out to eat.
He ate mealworms and crickets.

We're feeling happy and excited!
Slick is happy too!

Slick got us excited about reading about salamanders.

Slick is a tiger salamander. He is cute.

Numbers in the Teens

We're starting to work very hard on place value this week. We started with the teen numbers - they can be really tricky since you don't say "ten-five" like you do "twenty-five".

Today our mathematicians built numbers with linking cubes and practiced writing numbers to go with them.

Here are 2 fun songs we use to practice teens -

This song is only about WRITING numbers. It help us remember to fix those reversals. EX 17 instead of 71

This is the one we sing to help us understand and remember the groups of ten concept.

Where do readers read?

We've been focusing on what readers do this past week. We read Lola at the Library, as a quick fun way to talk about where we read. We read We Are In A Book, by Mo Willems also.

After we read the story, we made this great thinking map about all the places we love to read. We used an app called Popplet Lite, that we are loving!

Where else would you add?

Have a great weekend!

Compare - greater than, less than

Yesterday and today we started discussing greater than and less than. We are comparing numbers and making comparison statements like the ones at the bottom of our chart.

We recorded a picture in our math journals to help us remember while we played our new game.

The game we played was Compare Dots. It's just like playing War or Battle with playing cards. Except, you have to make a comparison statement to take the cards.

The winning player above would have said "10 is greater than 8."

You can play at home with playing cards!

Writing Station

Today we opened up our writing station. We are so excited about all the things we can write! What else would you add to our list of things we can write? :)

Papa, Please Get the Moon For Me - math game

Today we played Papa Please Get the Moon for Me. We practiced counting to 30, noticing groups of 5 and 10, and counting on from a number.

If you rolled a moon, how many cubes would you add on this game board? - rolling a moon means you get to fill the ladder to the moon!

How many are in this ladder? How many would you have to add to get to the moon?

Making books with Brown Bear

Today we started writing books that go with Brown Bear, Brown Bear by Eric Carle.

We used our names instead of animals! Books will come home soon!

Open House & Augmented Reality

We are all really excited for Open House on Tuesday, September 3rd!

There will be a PTO meeting in the gym at 5:30, then students will want to bring their parents by their classrooms to show off what we've done in the 1st week. Open house will last from 5:30 - 6:30.

You won't want to miss our 1st bulletin board! We used the Aurasma app to add augmented reality to our artwork inspired by a book we read. You'll be able to hover a mobile device over our artwork, then "see" a second piece of artwork on your mobile device! It's SOOO cool!

We'd love for you to come see how it works!

Watch the book trailer of The OK Book that inspired our art!
