Literacy / Newsletter & Homework Tabs

I added some great information to the tabs at the top of our class blog this weekend.

Under the Literacy tab -

You can now view both of our high frequency word lists.
We are working on the 75 word list right now - some of them are review words from kinder and some will be new to our 1st graders this year.
After those words are on the wall, we'll move on to the 100 word list.

Expect to see High Frequency word evaluations coming home each 9 weeks. I'll be working to differentiate words, so that if your child already knows it, they aren't practicing it more.


Under the News & Homework tab -

You can now access any homework or newsletter that you can't find. Each week's work will be at the top of the list.

Place Value Party

Yesterday and today we've been having a place value party!

We started by reading Zero by Kathryn Otoshi. It's a great way to get us thinking about tens and ones.

Then we got started building tens and ones with several different math tools.

Slick Came Out

Slick came out to eat.

He ate mealworms and crickets.

We're feeling happy and excited!

Slick is happy too!

Slick got us excited about reading about salamanders.

Slick is a tiger salamander. He is cute.

Numbers in the Teens

We're starting to work very hard on place value this week. We started with the teen numbers - they can be really tricky since you don't say "ten-five" like you do "twenty-five".

Today our mathematicians built numbers with linking cubes and practiced writing numbers to go with them.

Here are 2 fun songs we use to practice teens -

This song is only about WRITING numbers. It help us remember to fix those reversals. EX 17 instead of 71

This is the one we sing to help us understand and remember the groups of ten concept.

Where do readers read?

We've been focusing on what readers do this past week. We read Lola at the Library, as a quick fun way to talk about where we read. We read We Are In A Book, by Mo Willems also.

After we read the story, we made this great thinking map about all the places we love to read. We used an app called Popplet Lite, that we are loving!

Compare - greater than, less than

Yesterday and today we started discussing greater than and less than. We are comparing numbers and making comparison statements like the ones at the bottom of our chart.

We recorded a picture in our math journals to help us remember while we played our new game. 

The game we played was Compare Dots. It's just like playing War or Battle with playing cards. Except, you have to make a comparison statement to take the cards.

The winning player above would have said "10 is greater than 8." 

You can play at home with playing cards!

Writing Station

Today we opened up our writing station. We are so excited about all the things we can write! What else would you add to our list of things we can write? :)
