Dilly Bread Recipe

This is how to make Dilly Bread ...

                                DILLY BREAD

1 package dry yeast
¼ cup warm water
1 cup creamed cottage cheese
2 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons instant minced onion
1 tablespoon butter
2 teaspoons dill seed or dill weed
1 ½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon soda
1 unbeaten egg
2 ¼ to 2 ½ cups flour

Soften yeast in warm water.  Heat cottage cheese to lukewarm:  add sugar, onions, butter, dill, salt, soda, egg and softened yeast.  Beat well.  Add flour to form a stiff dough.  Beat well.  Cover.  Let rise in warm place for about 1 hour until double in bulk.  Stir down and put into well-greased bread pan.  Let rise for about 30 minutes.

Bake at 350 degrees for 40 to 50 minutes.  Brush with butter and a bit of salt.

The Herb Garden Ladies gave us this recipe so we could make dilly bread with the dill from our garden.

Earth Day Project

So we're a little late but we wanted to share our Earth Day Project.

We read Step Gently Out by Helen Frost.

Here's a book trailer to get you excited -

Step Gently Out • A nature picture book for all ages from Step Gently Out on Vimeo.

After we read the beautiful poem and decided that Helen Frost wrote the poem to share her love of bugs and inspire others to notice, protect and enjoy them too. We put all our thoughts about her purpose for writing the book into ABCya's Word Cloud. Then used Pic Collage to combine it with images from the book.

We used ThingLink to add everyone's thinking recorded from Croak.it, and added a few extras at the top. Here's the final result.

This week we'll be sharing our research videos and lots about plants! Check back soon!

Theme Poems

Last week we used & loved one of the ReadWriteThink.org creation tools - Theme Poems

You can access the site by clicking the "Sites for Learning" tab above and clicking "Read Write Think - Poem Maker.

They are so simple ...

Just visit the site and type your name.

Then select a theme.
I really like that they have quite a few to choose from, each folder has between 5 to 8 shapes.

Next, a brainstorming page is provided.

Quick tip - The words you type in here will show up on the next page, but you can't click to add them to the actual poem. The students will have to retype anything they add here. You may want to do your  brainstorming on sticky notes if you're limited on time.

Your brainstorm words show up on the left hand side of the screen, and you can also type the title on the side. Then you'll click the text box inside of the shape to type your poem. When you are done click Finish, or take a screen shot of your poem in color.

From this last page you can print a black and white version, save or share your poem. You could save a  PDF version to Dropbox or Google Drive, then add color or create a poetry book on your iPad!

What will you create with Theme Poems?

Check out how adorable it is!

The kids drew themselves with Doodle Buddy, made their mouth move and added voice with ChatterPix Kids & then we put all the videos together with iMovie!

Here's the link if you want to watch it on YouTube -  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLKDASGRPMM
